Matt Bergeson McCalpin '14

Chief Operating Officer, Janji

Matt Bergeson McCalpin is the Chief Operating Officer at Janji, a performance running apparel brand that creates paths to explore the world through running. After graduating from Princeton University with a BA in the School of Public and International Affairs, Matt worked at Bain primarily consulting with Fortune 500 retail companies on digital transformation and product adjacency strategies. Matt then attended graduate school, earning joint Masters of Business Administration and Public Policy from Harvard Business School and Harvard Kennedy School.

Fascinated by e-commerce startups’ disruption of large retail companies, Matt joined Janji after graduating from Harvard. Over the last three years, he has improved Janji’s operations to support triple-digit annual sales growth as the brand has scaled both its e-commerce business and wholesale presence with outdoor retailer REI. Janji gear is now sold in all REI stores nationwide. Matt’s responsibilities at Janji include supply chain management, inventory planning, website development, product fulfillment & logistics, and cash flow management.

Matt is also passionate about increasing equitable access to quality education in the US. He currently serves on the advisory board of afterschool education non-profit Citizen Schools. While attending Harvard, Matt worked for Providence Mayor Elorza to build a new strategic plan for the city’s summer youth programs that serve ~10,000 students. For his Master’s Thesis, Matt built Microsprout, a college savings platform designed to support students and families in under-resourced communities.

In his free time, Matt likes to go for runs and hikes with his wife Kristin and dog Ollie. A former member of Princeton’s signature all-male a cappella group The Tigertones, Matt also enjoys singing and playing the piano at open mic nights. He loves word puzzles and claims to have never lost a game of Boggle.
